Safety requirements

You must agree to the following terms and conditions to enter the Mandurah Duel:

Insurance

All entrants must be covered by insurance for this event. You will be automatically covered to compete in this event if you are a current member of either Paddle WA (Paddle Australia) or AOCRA (Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association). One-day insurance for the event is available when registering. Outrigger clubs are required to ensure that all team entrants have current AOCRA membership.

OC6 canoes

All paddlers must be fully paid-up members of AOCRA (Australian Outrigging Canoe Racing Association) to participate in the Mandurah Duel. Participating clubs will be responsible for ensuring all their paddlers have current AOCRA membership and are covered by the association’s personal accident and public liability insurance.

All paddlers must attend the Race Briefing at the Mandurah Ocean Club at 12pm on the day of the race. All OC6 canoes must carry life jackets (6), a red or orange smoke flare, 2 bailing buckets, 1 spare paddle and a towrope. The towrope must be a SILVER ROPE that is a minimum of 25m in length and 12mm in diameter. The rope must be tied to the forward spreader, secured outside the covers and available for immediate use. All OC6 canoes must use storm covers during the race.

An in-date smoke flare and/or a PLB/EPIRB must be attached to the canoe during the race.

All outrigging craft must pass inspection by a Zone official for compliance with AOCRA safety equipment. The inspection will take place before the race at a designated area near the starting line at Dawesville (see race package for details).

Failure to comply with any of the above conditions will lead to automatic disqualification.

Competitors must ring the Race Director if they withdraw from the race. The Race Director’s phone number will be provided on a wristband before the race. Paddlers are encouraged to carry a mobile phone in a water proof bag.

A black flag will be raised by safety craft if a shark is sighted and deemed to pose a threat (for example, an attack has occurred). In this circumstance, the race will immediately cease and paddlers will be required to exit the water as quickly and safely as possible. However, if a paddler is made aware of the raising of the black flag and they choose to stay on the water, that paddler will be banned from competing in the DUEL the following year

Single and doubles craft

All single and doubles paddlers must sign an event waiver form that they understand the risks and acknowledge that they have read and understood the event water safety plan including their responsibilities to help a distressed paddler.

All paddlers must attend the Race Briefing at the Mandurah Ocean Club at 12pm on the day of the race.

All single and double craft paddlers must be attached to their craft via a leash during the race.

All single and double craft paddlers must wear (or carry bum bag type) life jackets (type 1, 2 or 3) capable of supporting their own weight. Life jackets cannot be the blowup type unless fitted with a gas canister

All single and double craft paddlers must present a leg leash and in-date flare (attached to their craft) as well as PFD for inspection by a Zone official. The inspection will take place before the race at a designated area near the starting line at Dawesville (see race package for details).

Failure to comply with any of these conditions will lead to automatic disqualification.
