You must agree to the following terms and conditions to enter the Mandurah Duel:

Paddler Safety

Insurance

All entrants must be covered by insurance for this event. You will be automatically covered to compete in this event if you are a current member of either Paddle WA (Paddle Australia) or AOCRA (Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association). If you are not a member of either body,one-day insurance for the event (provided through Paddle WA) is available on the day of the event. Outrigger clubs are required to ensure that all team entrants have current AOCRA membership.

Sign in and Race Briefing

  • All paddlers must sign in on the day of the event at the Mandurah Ocean Club before the Race Briefing.
  • All paddlers must sign an event waiver registration form that they understand the risks and acknowledge that they have read and understood the event water safety plan including their responsibilities in it (e.g. helping a distressed paddler, rendering assistance etc.).
  • All paddlers must attend the Race Briefing at 12pm at the Mandurah Ocean Club on the day of the race.

Withdrawing from the race

Competitors must ring the Race Director if they withdraw from the race. The Race Director’s phone number will be provided on a wristband before the race. Paddlers are encouraged to carry a mobile phone in a water proof bag.

Shark sightings

A black flag will be raised by safety craft if a shark is sighted and deemed to pose a threat (for example, an attack has occurred). In this circumstance, the race will immediately cease and paddlers will be required to exit the water as quickly and safely as possible. However, if a paddler is made aware of the raising of the black flag and they choose to stay on the water, that paddler will be banned from competing in the DUEL the following year

Safety equipment

OC6s

All OC6 canoes must carry life jackets (6), a red or orange smoke flare, 2 bailing buckets,1 spare paddle and a towrope. The towrope must be a minimum of 25m in length by 12mm diameter. It must be tied to the forward spreader, secured outside the covers and available for immediate use. It is compulsory that storm covers be used for OC6 canoes.

Singles and doubles craft

  • All single and double craft paddlers must wear life jackets Type 1, 2 or 3 capable of supporting their own weight (cannot be blow-up type unless fitted with a gas canister).
  • All single and double craft paddlers must be attached to their craft via a leash
  • All single and double craft paddlers must have an in-date smoke flare attached to their craft/person and/or a PLB/EPIRB and whistle.
  • All single and double craft paddlers must carry a mobile phone with the COAST GUARD SafeTRX App installed on it. Instructions on how to download and set up SafeTRX on your mobile phone.
